Because Hunger Doesn’t Take a Summer Vacation

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – May 31, 2018 – Brookwood Baptist Health is leading a community effort to provide area children and adults struggling with hunger with a healthy breakfast during the summer through its Healthy Over Hungry® Cereal Drive at all five of its area hospitals, including Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, Citizens Baptist Medical Center, Princeton Baptist Medical Center, Shelby Baptist Medical Center and Walker Baptist Medical Center. Benefitting area food banks, the drive kicks off Friday, June 1 and runs through Friday, June 8.

  • Citizens Baptist Medical Center cereal drive to benefit Samaritan House

“We are proud to participate in this annual event as our hospitals from Jasper through the Greater Birmingham area to Talladega help fight food insecurity,” stated Keith Parrott, CEO, Brookwood Baptist Health. “We recognize the importance of beginning each day with a nutritious breakfast and, through this drive, we hope to help many in our community struggling with hunger. We invite you to join us and help kids be Healthy Over Hungry this summer.”

In the Brookwood Baptist Health community served by our five medical centers, thousands of free or reduced-fee breakfasts and lunches are served daily during the school year. Whole-grain cereal, when part of a healthy, balanced breakfast including dairy, fruit and lean protein, is a popular food item that experts say can easily address the hunger gap during the summer months when children are not in school.

In addition to the cereal drive, Brookwood Baptist Health facilities are hosting bake sales, contests, prize drawings and other friendly forms of competition to determine which facility will emerge victorious as having collected the most cereal and funds for this worthy cause.

Donations of healthy cereal to the Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive as well as monetary donations will be collected from June 1 through June 8 at any of the five Brookwood Baptist Health hospitals. All financial donations made during our campaign will be matched by Brookwood Baptist Health’s parent company, Tenet Healthcare, up to $100,000.
