Shelby Baptist Medical Center’s Tower Imaging Surpasses Low Dose CT Screening Milestone

Shelby Baptist Medical Center’s Tower Imaging recently reached an important milestone by performing their 3000th low dose computed tomography (CT) screening just four years after launching the program.
“With this number of screenings performed, we have detected lung cancer early in many patients,” said Dr. Ben McDaniel, radiologist with Tower Imaging. “Early detection is what saves lives. I am proud of our staff for building the lung cancer screening program from its very foundation at this facility and building it into one of our most successful programs ever.”
In December 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended screening of adults aged 55 to 77 years who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Most medical insurances companies provide this screening covered at 100% and referring physicians have one single form with the noted criteria to fill out.
“We know some people are afraid or do not want to know if they have lung cancer,” said Joy Steadman, low dose CT coordinator at Tower Imaging. “I encourage each patient I speak with to take that first big step and schedule their low dose CT. Our patients are comforted knowing this is a quick and easy test where all they have to do is hold their breath for less than 10 seconds.”
Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer, claiming the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. Lung cancer screening with low-dose CT scans and appropriate follow-up care significantly reduce lung cancer deaths.
“With annual screenings, we can offer our patients continued quality care,” stated Steadman.
Tower Imaging is a Designated Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation is a voluntary program that recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer.
In order to receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of its lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. Also required are procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs.
