Brookwood Baptist Collected 96,495 Servings in Cereal Drive

Birmingham, AL – August 2, 2016 – Brookwood Baptist Health is pleased to announce that it collected 96,495 servings of cereal and more than $14K to provide area children and adults struggling with hunger with a healthy breakfast during the summer through its “Healthy Over Hungry” Cereal Drive benefiting the Community Foodbank of central Alabama, a member of Feeding America. The drive ran June 3-10, 2016.
“I am so proud of all of our colleagues for an outstanding effort to tackle childhood hunger through our “Healthy Over Hungry” Cereal Drive,” said Keith Parrott, chief executive officer of Brookwood Baptist Health. “Our mission is and always will be to restore good health to those we serve. Because good nutrition is essential to good health, we wanted to join the fight against hunger and shed light on a very real issue currently affecting one in six residents of our 12-county region.”

Brookwood Baptist Health’s generous donation helped provide 17,800 meals, releasing that extra burden on these families. We are thrilled that so many will now be helped because of the system’s leadership in addressing this community health issue.”

About Community Food Bank of Central Alabama
The CFBCA was founded in 1982 to combat the growing hunger problem in the Birmingham area. The food bank solicits and receives both new and commercially excess but fully edible food from multiple food industry sources, and in turn distributes that food to over 235 nonprofit agencies in the community. Those Partner Agencies include emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, residential programs, and snack programs. In turn, the agencies that receive food from the food bank must agree to distribute that food to the needy free of charge. Additionally, CFBCA provides direct services to those in need through its Mobile Pantry, Hospital Pantry, and Weekender’s Child Hunger programs. As Central Alabama’s largest hunger relief organization, CFBCA serves as the primary hunger safety net for an area that includes over a quarter-million people in poverty, of which nearly 90,000 are children. The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama serves twelve counties in Central Alabama, and in 2015 distributed over 11.9 million pounds of food in the community.
