What Is Diagnostic Imaging?
Diagnostic imaging is a subspecialty in medicine that uses a variety of equipment and techniques to create pictures of the structures and activities inside your body in detail. These images help physicians diagnose, treat and manage many medical conditions.
Common Types of Diagnostic Imaging Tests
Imaging tests are relatively painless, but some tests may require you to stay still for a long period of time inside a machine which can be uncomfortable for some people. Certain tests may make use of small doses of radiation.
Some of the most common types of diagnostic imaging tests include the following:
- X-ray
- CT scan
- Nuclear medicine scan
- MRI scan
- Mammography
- Ultrasound

Schedule an appointment at any of our imaging locations in Birmingham Central Alabama for the following services:
Digital mammography
Uses solid-state detectors found in digital cameras, which convert X-rays into electrical signals to produce images of the breast to visualize abnormalities in the breast tissue that can be seen on a computer screen or
printed on special films to look like screen-film mammograms.
MRI
Provides detailed pictures of the inside of the body using strong magnets and radio waves. MRI scanners help doctors examine the brain, spinal cord and nerves as well as muscles, ligaments and tendons to detect, diagnose, treat and monitor
diseases.
X-ray
Uses a small amount of radiation to create images of bones and organs. Medical X-ray scans can help physicians diagnose blocked blood vessels, bone cancer and infections.
CT Scan
Combines X-rays and computer scans to create images of the body using a motorized X-ray source that rotates around the circular opening of a donut-shaped structure called a gantry. The result is a detailed image that can show abnormalities
with soft tissues, organs and bones. CT scans create cross-sectional pictures of your body that help doctors look for fractures, cancers, blood clots, signs of heart disease and internal bleeding.
Bone Densitometry
Uses low-energy X-rays to scan the lower back, hip or forearm. This helps to diagnose osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones and makes them more brittle and susceptible to fracture.
Nuclear medicine
Uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose, evaluate or treat a multitude of diseases, such as heart disease, gastrointestinal/endocrine/ neurological disorders and certain types of cancers.
Positron emission tomography (PET)/CT scan
Combines PET and CT into one machine. From one single PET/CT scan, your doctor will have information about the structure and function of cells and tissues in your body. Since this diagnostic test
is on the cellular level, it can often identify changes that signify early stages of disease. The most common uses of PET/CT scans include detecting cancer, assessing the effectiveness of cancer therapy and studying brain abnormalities.
Depending
on the areas your doctor is imaging, the average PET/CT scan is less than 45 minutes. Some patients may be asked for a urine sample for a pregnancy test.
Ultrasound
Uses sound waves to produce images of the body's interior. One of the most common uses of ultrasound include monitoring the growth and development of the fetus during pregnancy as well as imaging of the heart, blood vessels, eyes,
thyroid, brain, breast, abdominal organs, skin and muscles.
