Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery

Weight loss and keeping the pounds off can be an ongoing struggle. If you’re obese and have struggled or many years to lose weight or you’ve lost weight in the past only to gain it back and diet and exercise have not proven successful, weight loss surgery—also known as bariatric surgery—could be an option.

Our care extends from general to more complex and chronic gastrointestinal disorders and diseases and encompasses lifestyle modification, medication and surgical approaches, including endoscopic and minimally invasive procedures to evaluate and treat various digestive disorders.

Weight loss surgery options we offer, depending on location, include:

  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
  • Laparoscopic/robotic roux-en-Y gastric bypass
  • Laparoscopic/robotic gastric sleeve

Surgery procedures are usually performed with minimally invasive techniques. Brookwood Baptist Health has four facilities offering surgical weight loss options:

Bariatric surgery is a major decision, and it is not an immediate or quick fix solution. Our compassionate surgeons at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, Princeton Baptist Medical Center, Shelby Baptist Medical Center and Walker Baptist Medical Center are committed to helping surgical weight loss patients reframe your future and live a healthy life.

Weight loss surgery is generally designed for those with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 40, or equal to or greater than 35 with serious co-morbidities. Weight loss surgery is considered safe, but like many types of surgery, it does have risks. Consult with your physician about the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery.
