Will I continue to take my medications before my surgery?
Your physician will make recommendations prior to surgery.
What if I get sick?
Notify your physician if you have a fever that lasts longer than 24 hours or if you develop flu-like symptoms.
Can I eat and drink before my surgery?
The evening before your surgery, eat a light dinner and do not drink alcoholic beverages. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery, or as instructed by your doctor. This includes water, chewing gum, and mints.
What about driving home after surgery?
You will not be able to drive yourself home following surgery. Make arrangements with a responsible adult to take you home. You should not drive until your doctor gives you clearance.
Prior to my scheduled surgery date, will I need Pre-Admission Testing (PAT)?
It is recommended you have Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) performed 2 to 10 days previous to your surgery. Your physician will order certain tests, determined by your medical condition, the procedure, and your age. The testing appointments last usually less than an hour, and are important in making sure both you and you doctor are prepared.

What should I bring with me to the hospital?
You should bring your insurance cards and driver’s license, a list of all medications you are currently taking with the names and dosages, and a copy of your advance directives.
On the day of my surgery, when should I get to the hospital?
Unless your physician instructs you otherwise, you should arrive at least two hours before your scheduled procedure.
May I bathe, brush my teeth, or wear any makeup and body piercings?
Before coming to the hospital you may bathe or shower, using antibacterial soap, and you may brush your teeth, but do not drink any water. Limit makeup and remove all body piercings and jewelry.
After surgery will I be able to see friends and family?
The length of time you will be in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) following your surgery will depend on your response to the anesthesia and the nature of the surgery. Visitors will not be allowed to see you during this recovery time, but your nurse will keep them informed.
Will I need to complete more forms when I arrive at the hospital?
Yes, when you get to hospital admissions you will be asked to complete additional paperwork.

If I need to cancel my surgery, what do I do?
Please notify your doctor and the hospital’s surgery scheduling department as soon as possible if you need to cancel your surgery.
You should talk with your doctor ahead of time to find out what you should expect based on the surgery you’re having.There are often many instructions to guide your care and recovery once you leave the hospital.
Prescription & Health Care Supplies
If prescription medications or other health care supplies are a part of your discharge plan, the hospital pharmacy can deliver these items to you so you don’t have to make an additional stop at an outside pharmacy.
Transportation
The hospital does not provide transportation. You should make arrangements with a responsible adult to take you home. You will not be able to drive yourself home following surgery.
