Princeton Baptist Medical Center Celebrates 100 Years of Serving the Birmingham Community

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – This January, Princeton Baptist Medical Center celebrates its centennial year serving the Birmingham community as well as many counties of north central and southwest Alabama. The hospital was the first of four Birmingham area Baptist hospitals and opened its doors in the West End community on Jan. 20, 1922.

“We are proud to mark this milestone by reflecting on our hospital’s legacy and embracing the exciting things that are in store for our team,” said Princeton Baptist CEO Mike Neuendorf.

Previously Birmingham Baptist Hospital, the facility now known as Princeton Baptist opened on Jan. 20 with 39 patients in house. Additionally, there were eleven more patients admitted that day. At that time, the facility was a 90-bed hospital. Now, Princeton Baptist is licensed for 505 beds.

Prior to being purchased by the Birmingham Baptist Association, it was the Birmingham Infirmary.

The history of the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing is closely woven with that of the hospital given the first class of students had been admitted to Birmingham Infirmary.

Princeton continues to offer a residency program allowing students to learn more about the medical field in a hands-on environment.

Another element of Princeton’s history includes being built on Christian principles that are still present in daily hospital operations today. The mission of Princeton Baptist is to extend the healing ministry of Christ through holistic, people-centered health care.

“This year is more than a time to just celebrate, but it is a time to honor the unwavering commitment of those employees who have served and continued to serve our community,” Neuendorf said.

From employee stories to celebratory events, there are many things in store for Princeton’s centennial year. To learn more, please contact Brittney Knox-Mensah at [email protected].
