Brookwood Baptist Medical Center today announced Elizabeth Vernon, RN, Palliative & Supportive Care, has been inducted into the Tenet Heroes 2018 Hall of Fame, Tenet’s highest honor for colleagues.

The Tenet Heroes program celebrates those individuals who make a meaningful impact within their respective communities that goes above and beyond their daily job responsibilities. Nominated by fellow colleagues, Tenet Heroes exemplify the company’s core values of quality, integrity, service, innovation and transparency.  Since 2008, Tenet has recognized nearly 1,400 Heroes, 88 of whom have been inducted into the Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame.

Vernon was recognized for her dedication as a palliative care nurse to bring comfort and dignity to terminal patients and their families. In addition to her work at Brookwood Baptist, through her leadership, courage and empathy, Vernon tirelessly volunteers her time and energy to those less fortunate. Through multiple medical mission trips, she has helped heal and share God’s love with the people of Limbe, Haiti.

Over the past six years, Vernon helped build a clinic in Haiti and procured pharmaceutical supplies and medical equipment. She recruited and expanded the volunteer reach to include paramedics, firefighters, nurses and other medical staff to treat up to 300 patients per day.

Her desire to serve others is not limited by the borders of Haiti. At home, Vernon is a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for Jefferson and Shelby Counties. She also volunteers at a local church and teaches science to home schooled children.

“Elizabeth personifies the very best in human kindness, and I am thankful her actions were recognized and honored in such a special way,” said Keith Parrott, CEO, Brookwood Baptist Health. “We are grateful for Elizabeth’s efforts, selfless nature and commitment to compassionate care, and we are proud to work alongside her. On behalf of the Brookwood Baptist family, we congratulate her on this prestigious honor.
