Brookwood Baptist Medical Center Names Dr. Jitendra Sharma, Interventional Neurologist, 2019 Physician of the Year

Dec 13, 2019

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Dec. 13, 2019 – The medical staff of Brookwood Baptist Medical Center named Jitendra Sharma, M.D. its 2019 Physician of the Year. The distinguished honor is the culmination of the hospital’s monthly physician recognition and recognizes physicians who exemplify the core values of Brookwood Baptist Medical Center – integrity, service, quality, transparency and innovation.

Jitendra SharmaDr. Sharma is recognized for his collaborative approach to patient care. By embracing all facets of the patient journey and the critical team members in each of those areas essential in the treatment of stroke, patients are provided with the highest-quality, comprehensive care. As one of only five interventional neurologists in Alabama, he has been the pivotal player in establishing Brookwood’s stroke program, which was recently recognized with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Quality Achievement Award. As one of only three hospitals statewide to achieve this highest level distinction, the standard of care that he has helped to establish and sustain for the treatment of stroke at our hospital is invaluable.

Dr. Sharma helped implement RAPID advanced image screening for stroke patients as well as a one-call transfer line so patients can seamlessly transfer from other Brookwood Baptist Health hospitals to Brookwood Baptist Medical Center as a Primary Stroke Center. Dr. Sharma participates in multiple stroke conferences inside and outside of his immediate network and has done a wide variety of outreach events to physicians, EMS, fire and paramedics.

“Dr. Sharma is an essential member of our team, and we are fortunate to have such a skilled, compassionate physician providing specialized care to our patients,” stated Tim Puthoff, CEO, Brookwood Baptist Medical Center. “Dr. Sharma is committed to providing the highest quality care to every patient and to continuing to improve the standard of stroke care in our community.”
