Every Day is Special

Rev. Dr. Cecelia A. Walker

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10

When my daughter was about five years old, she received an Easy Bake Oven for Christmas. One day she baked a batch of brownies and insisted on taking some to her favorite neighbor. When she arrived next door and presented the brownies on a delicate crystal plate, he asked, “Does your mother know you have her good plate?”  She said “Yes Sir, I wanted to do something special!

I often think about that day, and her simple but profound sentiment. How often do we purchase things and save them for a “special day”? We spend significant amounts of money on fine china and use it once or twice a year when “company” comes, when the truth of the matter is that the people most precious to us should be those in our families that we see each day.  Sometimes we “save” our best behavior for those outside of the home and even perfect strangers whom we are trying to impress. We take for granted that our spouses, children, parents and siblings will always be around and already know how we feel.

The abundant life Jesus offers is found in the everydayness of life. Finding joy in the simple things: making people feel special just because; using the special dishes to celebrate having family and friends that love us day in and day out through the highs and lows of life; wearing that special outfit because you are special…fearfully and wonderfully made.

James 4:14 describes the brevity of life… “But you do not know what will happen tomorrow! Your life is like a mist. You can see it for a short time, but then it goes away.” What occasion are we saving our best for? Every day is special!

Prayer:
Dear God help us to appreciate every moment of every day, recognizing that each day and each moment are precious gifts from You. Thank You for the indescribable gift we have in Christ. Amen
